Maria Messina Wiersma Brings Disability Advocacy and Personal Experience to Special Needs Law
Macomb, United States - August 23, 2026 / Fuller Special Needs Law /
MACOMB, Mich. — Fuller Special Needs Law today announced that attorney Maria R. Messina Wiersma has joined the firm. Her addition expands the firm’s ability to help parents build plans around their child’s actual life, not simply the transfer of money.
Many parents are the only people who fully understand how all the pieces of their child’s life fit together. They carry the knowledge of daily routines, important relationships, public benefits, medical needs, decision-making responsibilities, and hopes for the future.
A special-needs trust can be essential, but a legal document alone cannot capture and carry forward everything a family knows.
At Fuller Special Needs Law, Messina Wiersma will help families turn that knowledge into a coordinated Fuller Life Plan that future trustees, caregivers and decision-makers can understand and use.
“Families are not simply asking us to prepare documents. They are asking who will know what they know and how the plan for their child will continue. Maria understands that question both professionally and personally. Her experience, judgment and longstanding commitment to disability advocacy make her a natural fit for the way we serve families.”
— Michele P. Fuller, Founder and Attorney, Fuller Special Needs Law
Messina Wiersma’s commitment to this work is personal. As the sibling of a person with a disability, she has seen how thoughtful planning, informed advocacy and access to the right support can affect a person’s quality of life and a family’s confidence in the future.
“Your child’s future shouldn’t live only in your head. Families deserve a plan that reflects who their child is, what supports are important and how the people who come next can make informed decisions. I’m proud to join a firm that listens to the family first and then builds the legal plan around the child’s life.”
— Maria R. Messina Wiersma, Attorney, Fuller Special Needs Law
Messina Wiersma earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Her professional service includes work with The Arc Michigan and The Arc of Macomb County. She is also active in the State Bar of Michigan’s Elder Law and Disability Rights Section, where she previously served as chair.
Michigan Lawyers Weekly recognized Messina Wiersma as one of its 2017 Up & Coming Lawyers. She is also a frequent speaker on special-needs planning, elder law, and disability-related legal issues.
Families working with Messina Wiersma can expect Fuller Special Needs Law to first learn their child’s world, then build the legal plan, and help keep it aligned as circumstances change.
“A trust document without a care plan is a guess with legal formatting,” Fuller said. “Maria strengthens our ability to help families plan for life, not just the money.”
