One-of-a-kind postdoctoral opportunity supports an emerging scholar in writing and publishing their first major book on Canadian art

TORONTO, Oct. 13, 2026 /CNW/ -- The Art Canada Institute (ACI) is now accepting applications for the 2027 New Voices Publishing Fellowship, a prestigious $60,000 postdoctoral opportunity for an emerging scholar to write and publish their first major book. Applications are open until January 15, 2027.
The only opportunity of its kind in Canada, the 12-month fellowship gives an early-career scholar dedicated time, professional editorial support, and mentorship to transform original research into an authoritative, richly illustrated online art book. The completed publication will be released in English and French and made freely available to readers around the world through ACI's digital library.
"Emerging scholars bring essential new questions, perspectives, and areas of research to Canadian art history, and they need meaningful opportunities to turn that work into publications that reach beyond the academy," says Sara Angel, Founder and Executive Director of the Art Canada Institute. "The New Voices Publishing Fellowship is about giving the next generation of scholars the opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the field of art history—to produce ambitious new work and ensure it reaches readers across Canada and around the world."
Beginning in September 2027, the successful fellow will develop an original manuscript of approximately 30,000 to 40,000 words in close collaboration with ACI's editorial team. They will also have opportunities to work with leading figures in the Canadian art world and present their research to ACI's community of scholars, artists, and patrons.
The New Voices Publishing Fellowship is designed to help an early-career art historian take a defining step in their professional journey. Through the process of developing a major publication with ACI, the fellow will gain hands-on publishing experience, learn to shape specialized research for a broad public audience, and contribute a lasting new resource to the study of art in Canada.
ACI welcomes applications from Canadian citizens and permanent residents who hold, or will hold before the fellowship begins, a PhD in art history or a closely related field.
Applications close January 15, 2027. To review eligibility requirements, explore ACI's publishing streams, register for a virtual information session, and apply, visit: https://artcanada.com/fellowship.
